I’m most passionate about telling a good story. This doesn’t just have to be words, you can tell a story through a game in a dozen ways that don’t involve actual text. For me it’s all about the player journey, what do we want the player to feel, to think as they’re playing? I try to apply the same thought with anything that I try to write, as well. To relax… at the moment it’s horror fiction podcasts, can’t get to sleep without a great spooky story! I load up something simple on my phone, like a match 3 or a sudoku, and pop a podcast on. Other than that it’s the classics – playing video games (naturally), exploring London with my friends, and going on long walks along the river.

Q

Earliest gaming memory?

Answer
Getting a demo disc with Crash Team Racing on it with our PSOne and the whole family playing it so much my parents eventually bought it for us.

Q

What was the game that triggered you looking at games as a career?

Answer
The opening sequence of Final Fantasy X – it was my first big narrative game and it made me realise games weren’t just ‘toys’, they were their own incredible thing. A few months later my friend mentioned off hand “you know people get paid to make games, right?” (we were about 10 years old) and it’s been what I’ve worked towards ever since!

Q

Game that inspired you the most?

Answer
Hmm… Probably Persona 4? Whilst it does have a lot of anime culture stuff that people who don’t watch anime might find silly/weird, it actually handles some deep psychological themes about discovering your own identity and accepting the parts of yourself that you might not like. Even so, it’s still upbeat, fun, and stylish. For me, it shows a lot about what you can achieve through telling a great story through games.

Q

What is the first game you worked on?

Answer
“Coaster Crazy” Frontier’s mobile rollercoaster game. …Yeah, no one else has heard of it either, don’t worry!

Q

Games you’re the proudest to have worked on?

Answer
Witcher 3 or Life Is Strange (Original release). I was just a Localisation QA but I really enjoyed working with the team to make sure the language and translations on both titles fit the tone of the game. Making sure all the text in Witcher was hitting the right tone of a grim and fantasy epic, whilst LIS was modern American slang was really interesting (although I never want to hear the word “wowser” again…).

Q

If you weren’t making games?

Answer
Honestly, not sure… maybe a writer? Or maybe I decided to stick with Science at A level and I’d be doing medical research somewhere? Who knows!

Q

Top 3 games of all time?

Answer
#1 - Persona 4 #2 - Final Fantasy X #3 - Spyro 2

Q

Hardest Game Boss?

Answer
Gym Leader Whitney in Pokémon… Miltank.
