Giving Back: Supporting the Next Generation of Games Graduates
At Fuse, we’re proud to support future games talent. Recently, Joseph returned to Southampton Solent University to share career advice with graduating students.
Breaking into games isn't easy. Like any industry that is born from the arts, those who find themselves in it often do so serendipitously. At Fuse, we believe in the importance of supporting the next generation of talent searching for their career in the games industry. That's why we're so proud of Joseph, who recently returned to their alma mater, Southampton Solent University, to take part in an event designed to connect final-year computer games students with industry professionals.
The day gave graduating students the opportunity to showcase their work, learn from those working in the industry, and gain practical advice for the next step in their careers. As part of the event, Joseph delivered a presentation on how to make a portfolio stand out when applying for jobs and offered one-to-one portfolio reviews.

For Joseph, it was a particularly meaningful experience. Having once been sat in that very same lecture halls, he was inspired to give back:
QuoteWhen I was at Solent, lecturers and visiting professionals helped me shape my career. It felt important to return the favour and support today’s students as they get ready to enter the industry.
One of the standout moments of the day came from a collaborative student project that has already been released on Steam. The students’ enthusiasm, creativity, and pride in their work left a lasting impression - a powerful reminder of the talent and passion coming through the pipeline.

While much of the day was about teaching and sharing industry know-how, Joseph highlighted that it was also an opportunity to learn:
QuoteWhat I enjoyed most was the exchange of knowledge that we had. Sure, I taught them new things, but I also learned about the unique ways their generation build processes and collaborate.
Here some of Joseph's top tips when it comes to creating powerful portfolios:
- Be original - show what makes your work uniquely yours.
- Show it proudly – lead with your best work.
- Include technical breakdowns – give insight into your process as well as the final result.
Events like this are a reminder of the fledgling talent hoping to join the industry and crucially, the importance of pros giving back to those who are starting their own journey. We are really proud to have folk on the team who not only excel in their work but who live our values – leading by example to inspire and support others along the way.
